Almost Winter
As the first week of December comes to a close, a threat of snow is in the air and almost all outdoor work is complete. The past week was spent filling up a 30 yard dumpster (I had originally ordered a 20 yarder, but realized we had a lot more junk to get rid of from the basement and the garage). With the help of my wife and daughter, I filled most of the dumpster up in three days. There is still plenty of work left down in the basement in terms of moving items in what was the old "playroom", but the major stuff is now all gone.
Since I had the dumpster on site, I figured perhaps I could also put in the new glass sliding door over in what we now call our garden room and get rid of the door and two windows that exist there now. It was the small sunroom where my father used to rest after working out in the garden for hours on end. Since we actually have two of these sun room additions on the house, the slider would duplicate the slider we have on the sunroom we have on the other side of the house.
The slider would provide plenty of sunlight for us to put out our seedlings in early spring. We had quite good success this past year using the other room, despite not having heat there. Now, both rooms will be heated as the larger sunroom has a pellet stove.
I will get a quote from our favorite carpenter tomorrow, hoping that the entire cost will stay below $2,000. I was originally thinking of putting in a Pella vinyl patio slider, which was very reasonably priced ($481.00), but decided that with all the good luck I have had with Andersen Sliders, I would get another 400 Series Slider at $1072.00. The Andersen Slider would be similar to the one in the other sunroom (right side of house) and is much more durable and solid (wood with vinyl trim). So, the initial expense is quite a bit higher, but the cost of keeping the room warm should be easier on the pocketbook.
Once this project is complete, I will join the rest of the bear families around the world and hibernate for the winter.
