January Thaw
On Monday temperatures got up to 55 degrees, despite heavy winds and rain. By this afternoon almost all the snow on the property is gone. There will be heavy runoff as the ground is still pretty frozen, but excitement about starting some seeds is rampant.
On January 14th I started my first tomato plants (July 4th) and they are now up and almost have true leaves. I finally gave in and bought a heating mat and found that my wife had two grow lights which I figured out how to suspend from our metal shelving. This is a first effort in this area, ever, so I will be interested in how things work out. Along with the tomatoes I planted some spinach, but those seeds never germinated. I did a second planting of the spinach last Thursday and one of those seeds has come up. I also planted three rows of 8 snapdragons, dianthus, astors and forget me nots, for a total of 72 plants. They are under the heating mat.
Most of the seeds are from American Seed Co., a local company that sells to Walmart. The packets are $.20 cents a piece, so it will be interesting as to how well they come out. The tall snapdragons came from Lowe's (they have been hard to find, although I did find some today that Burbee sells.)

First tomato transplant from original starter cell (Bob Thompson method of growing seedlings)
Idea is to transplant to new cell after first true leaves appear. Done on Jan 27, 2010
