Another Year - Feb 13, 2011

Well, it's been quite some time since my last posting.  This has been due, mainly to a winter not soon to be forgotten.  Certainly, it wasn't all that bad, considering we live up here in New England.  But for the last 12 or so years we have been spoiled by relatively mild winters.  Not since 1996 has there been so much snow.  We are up over 60 inches and nothing has melted over the last month or so.  Finally, this week, we are supposed to get some warm weather (high in the 40's), so maybe we can see the ground again in another week or so.

The gardening experiment of last year will not be duplicated this year.  We have a lot of other things going on, in particular, we have to do some house improvements as my daughter and her husband will be moving into the in-law portion of the house and my wife and I will be moving back over to the main house.

What that means is putting in wood flooring for the sun room, a new kitchen, a new upstairs bathroom and wood flooring for the living room.  Boy, it sure sounds like they are getting a pretty good deal here.  The in-law is a two bedroom, 2 bath two story attachment to our main house.  The kitchen is quite large, big enough for an area for eating and the sunroom (my original greenhouse last year).

So, to make a long story shorter, I will be cutting back on the amount of seedlings I will be growing ahead of time.  I knew that I wouldn't grow 48 tomato plants again, but I am also going to have to start later and plant much fewer seeds prior to the season starting up again.  My plan is to cut back to about six tomato plants, start them later and hope for getting some crops by the end of June, instead of the middle of April, as was the case last year.

So, a new year, new adventures and lots and lots of work around the house (the usual).  First up will be the wood flooring in the sunroom.  The wood has been bought (Lumber Liquidators) at a sell off price ($2.39 per square foot).  I bought a nail gun so I don't rush the job too quickly and have enough time to also do the kitchen and living room at a reasonable pace.  The last time I put in hardwood flooring was in the other sunroom, but that was done with the help from my brother.  It took us one evening and half the next day.
