June is Popping
We keep getting notices of rain coming, yet other than a few drops here and there, we have been pretty dry for quite some time. Fortunately our well is working and the sprinkler system is providing plenty of water for both grass and vegetables. The potato bugs are still coming and despite spraying with neem oil, new critters keep coming and I just keep picking them off. A few tomatoes have also been attacked, but so far, I have been able to stay on top of that.
Peas are now in full harvest, along with the lettuce that has continued to grow well despite the warm temperatures. It has been amazing to me to see how well the lettuce is growing, as I have never seen such large heads of lettuce previously, as far as I can remember. The soil here is quite good and along with adding leaf mold, alfalfa horse feed (wet down to break it down) the plants seem to be getting some good nutrition. Even the broccoli is holding on as my rabbits seem to no longer find the leaves of interest.
The first cucumber was picked today, a stubby straight 8, but it looks quite healthy. I will have to check back and see when I had the first crop last year. The cucumbers were planted May 10 and 30 days later we have our first one. Pretty amazing, I would think.
Our fields around us are also "popping" as wheat, corn, potatoes, soybeans are all in mid-season form. The corn down the street is now up to my waist, growing very quickly.
I found a website where one can convert photos to paintings, so I am posting a photo of the corn field converted to a computer generated painting.
