The little cottage on Walden Pond Drive

The Cottage
A lonely tomato plant ready for planting
Nevada and Buttercrunch lettuce seedling ready to go

After a 17 hour drive down Route I-95, we arrived at our winter cottage with temperatures holding in the mid-70's at 2 am, our arrival time. Day temperatures are in the mid 80's with a nice breeze at all times. On the first day down here I saw a small, but pretty rainbow, hopefully a sign of good things for this season. This is our 8th year coming down to Florida and we always find things to do and reasons to return. Of course, the weather has the biggest impact on our stay, as we seem to no longer care for the colder, wet months up north. We have lots of plans ahead, but the first detour came along quickly as I tried to fix a dripping kitchen faucet. After unsuccessfully cleaning the washers, I figured a 1988 faucet needed to go. Home Depot had a nice Delta faucet, single handle with a spray, so I was on my way. Ah, but not so fast. As I took out the original faucet, the main water pipe coming to the kitchen snapped. Yikes! Good thing I knew where the water shut off was located, as I hustled out the front door and cut the flow. Seven hours later, I replaced bad pipe and faucet and looked for leaks. Yup, there were leaks, but not where I glued in the piping, rather at joints. So, another trip to Harbor Freight for some open faced wrenches (the ones I had were too small) and I was able to tighten all the joints, except the one to the dishwasher. So, one more morning of working on that and it looks like all is now dry. No drips or leaks in the faucet and nothing underneath the cabinet. Next up is setting up my lettuce table, similar to what I have up in Delaware. I brought some seedlings down, along with one tomato plant, whose variety is a mystery. It had self-seeded in with the lettuce. I am guessing it is some kind of cherry tomato. Lots of other projects planned and making our new place more "home like" is in the future. For now, I hope to keep up the walking as my body adapts to the warm temperatures and I just keep on moving along.
